I taught the wife to drive stick (another late bloomer) in my Roc and I
just made sure that she depressed the clutch all the way on each shift.
Skipping gears won't hurt anything but big jumps like 1st to 4th at
3000RPMs will bog the motor bad. If your buddy does this just have him put
it back into neutral and try again. Don't even bother trying to teach him
downshift braking until he gets the upshift part right.
Oh, it's an Honda
Well then he should obviously rev the motor and yank it out of gear with
the clutch depressed one inch. The he sould let the clutch out and cram it
into any other gear by applying large amounts of pressure to the gearshift.
