It's been a while, but I did one.  I'll see if I can remember all the
steps; if I leave anything out, I'm sure someone will jump in.

First, disconnect the negative battery cable.  Take off the steering wheel,
remove the radio and the gauge cluster.  You'll have to disconnect all the
heater controls, too.

There are two screws on each side of the dash.  They're a PITA to get to
(because of the doors), so you better have one of those little screwdrivers
that work like a ratchet (the screwdriver tip is angled 90 degrees from the
handle).  You *can* do it with a stubby, but it's harder and you may bung
up the screws.

Once the dash is loose, you need to unhook all the heater vents and stuff.
You may also find a big hookup point for the ground wires on the driver's
side.  (I think it's there on all MK Is, but I'm not sure.)

Once everything is loose, start working the dash out.  (A friend helps a
*lot* here, but you can do it by yourself if necessary.)  The window seal
comes out with the dash; pay attention to how it was sitting in there.

Just reverse the procedure to put the new one in.  Again, having a helper
makes the job about a billion times easier.  The window seal is really the
worst part.  I stuck the dash more or less in place, put the seal on top of
it, and worked it in with a screwdriver wrapped with a rag.  I'm sure
there's a better way, though.
