Pretty much true, it's just a stroked 1.6.

This is where it's at for "cheap" and "easy" power.  Pretty straight
swap.

If it's really a GTI, then yes it's a 1.8.  Yes get it if you're serious
about swapping.

Incidently, all the newer engines pretty much bolt-in also.  There will
be some hood clearance problems with some newer 'tall' blocks.  Not an
issue with a 1.8 from the same era.

Yes.  In fact the GTI should have a close ratio 2H tranny.  Probably needs
to be rebuilt before it succumbs to Self Machining.
