Engine Swap question

I have an '81... stock everything.

This spring I was considering an engine upgrade (1.7 is seemingly weak).

I don't have money for much... I was thinking just going to a JH 1.8l 
and going from there.

Now, I just saw an ad in the local classifieds for an '84 rabbit GTI 
engine with 50k miles for $100. Is this a 1.8l?

Should I investigate this engine since coupling it with my old '81 car 
would be easier than with a newer engine?

Will any of these engines mount right to my existing 5-spd?
