Easy question

I know this might sound stupid but...I just put a new shifter knob on and
noticed it doesn't come down all the way to the black plastic around the
'stick', so you see some of the threads that are used to screw it on.  Can I
just hacksaw about a half inch off the top so the knob comes down further
and looks neater? I can't think of any reason why I shouldn't be able to do
this.
