Re: Short shift / tranny
I put some pics up of my ss conversion. It's actually from an 85 GTI, but
the differences are small. I also did this to my 87 16v.
The pictures are at http://www.angband.org/dan/ss.html , they are
untitled so far, so here are some descriptions.
1. Unmodified shift yoke, degreased and sandblasted
2. Clamped in the vice, I'm about to pound that top part flat.
3. See that tracing in the background? I traced the unmodified shift yoke
first. Then I cut off the yoke and drilled a piece of scrap metal I had. I
made the cut so that the new piece would be the same distance from the
tranny when it was installed. The end hole corresponds to the stock throw,
the bottom is like 50-55% reduction. Instead of cutting and welding, you
might be able to just pound the old yoke into the shape you need.
4. The new part, welded to the yoke. BTW, the right tracing was of the
yoke from the GTI, the left was from my '87 16v. The dotted line is the
centerline of the most throw reduction hole.
5 Top view of the new part.
