Price of used 16v engines?

Its about that time for me to swap engines too.
...with my rings and valves beyond
their service lives. (18-23% leakage all around
in a leak-down test!!) I don't have the 
resources to go for a rebuild, so I'm hunting 
for low mileage 16v oem engines. I've come across
a 1.8L 16v with low original miles.
What is a fair price for the longblock with
no manifolds or distributors or FI? 
Can a very STRONG original 2.0L 16v longblock 
be had for under $1000 US? 

Anyone had nightmare experiences buying an engine 
through classifieds...Should I stick to reputable
shops?  recall that I'm not going to rebuild it, 
so I'm worried about ending up with a turd of an
bad engine.
