initial rough idle when coming to a stop

hey all,

what's the deal here?
the car already idles around 750-1000rpm. it's a bit low. ok.
when i drive and come to a stop, the damn thing nearly stalls on me! it
goes to a shuddering 500rpm or so. after two or three cycles of rought
idling at the stop, it gets back to normal. any thoughts?
