Everything I've heard and read about forged is that they suck for street
applications. We're lucky to have VW's in the fact that the stock
short-block is extremely strong, and you shouldn't need anything more than
stock cast piston. I've been running .020 over 1.8 pistons for about 6 or
7k miles with no problems. If you upgrade anything on the bottom end,
quality rods and rod/main bolts should be first. You gonna spend some $$$
though!

Try GEX for stock engine parts, I've found some great deals there. I paid
like $130 for .50mm over Mahle (read: quality) pistons. I also got a good
crank, and a flywheel there.

I dunno exactly what they do, but I know when they do the rods they wiegh
each end w/ a special holder and take weight off both ends. I would leave
it to the pros at this point, and I even ported my own head :)
