Re: MK1 KM-age [fuel consumption]

My cars tend to get good gas mileage, for some reason. I always keep track, and
my '86 8v gets 37-39 mpg like clockwork, whereas my QSW gets 26mpg. Not bad for
a 3100 pound, AWD car that does 0-60 in 9 seconds!
My Rabbit, eh, I dunno (the odometer's broken) but I've guessed around 33-35
mpg.
I attribute good gas mileage to having them tuned correctly, with gutted or
missing cats and free-flowing intake. Maybe I'm just lucky, though. But I'll
tell you that free-flowing exhaust makes a huge difference! I used to have an
'83 with a close-ratio, and it got 29mpg when I first got it running. It had a
gutted cat and stock muffler. I switched to a glasspack, and my gas mileage
went up to 33mpg. I've had a lot of people tell me that straight-through
exhaust isn't good for performance, but that was the fastest 8v I've ever
driven. Straight through, 1 7/8" exhaust seems to work pretty well!
