ok here's how i had my last two boxes built. i rebuilt a shelf out of 3/8"
particle board cut into 2 sections. i secured the section closest to the seat
to the side shelves. then i put a piano hinge on the other section so i could
access the trunk.... (all this was carpeted of course). then i had the box
built into the secured section.  they were 3 chambered boxes. there is
adiagram below.
