That would depend entirely on the speaker specs. For instance, if you are
using a Roadmaster, Kraco, or other low end 15, I would bet you would be
able to drive it directly with your head unit. But using a JL Audio, or
other high quality sub, you could probably drive it with a few hundred
watts. For reference, I used a HiFonics Hercules sub when I had 2 Kicker
15" subs mounted free air in the hatch area. I think that was around a 200W
amp. Find the speaker specs, it is important to know the impedance per
voice coil, number of voice coils, as well as the power handling
capability(and the recommended xover point would be nice as well). Figure
out how you would like to wire the subs(series, parallel, or some
combination for multiple voice coil units), which could depend on what box
design you use. Then find a sub amp that will handle driving the impedance
at the rated power level for your speakers. And one with a built in active
crossover would be nice, if you don't already have some other crossover in
your system.
I'm sure Ryan, Dan, and other people on the list who are more into audio
than I could probably elaborate, and maybe even point you in the right
direction for an amp, if you posted more info on the speakers.
