no start, fuel pump related

hey all,
sorry if this same post is up twice. i think i am having some server 
problems. ok my problem is that i whent out to start my 82 scirocco and 
it started but only ran for a few seconds then died. after that i could 
not get it started again. then i turned key on and i did not hear the 
fuel pump running like i usualy hear. so i checked the fuse and then 
tried to bypass the relay, by connecting the two red wires together, the 
fuel pump ran so i tried to start the car like that but nothing. Is 
there more to the relay than just suplying power to the fuel pump? Is 
there a way to check relays? they are kinda of exspensive to just 
replace if i don't need two ($30, kinda tight right now) Anyone have 
some ideas for me. I need this car to work, since my wife totaled our 
other car, and now the rocco has to pull its own :) I love my car but it 
has not been behaving so well latley.
