I used to have an '82 euro 1.6 carb GL auto.  When I first got it, it was
replacing a Ford 1.3 POS rustbucket so it felt like the dogs bollocks.   The
ratios are so wide you can virtually hit 70mph in second!  Compared with the
1.8 close-ratio manual I replaced it with ( now my wife's 1.8GT) it was
_very_ slow -  0-60 in 11 or 12 seconds I think - but it was still good fun
to drive and good for traffic queues.
