Re: Confused
My Golf GT has the 9A. At 90, I'm pulling 4K plus rpm.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! Drives me nuts!
But it's great at the stoplight and getting on the interstate.
My plan on this is to use a close ratio combined with a .71 fifth gear.
This will give me the acceleration I like in speeds 1-4, with a
comfortable highway fifth.
I figure 4th is good to about 85-90, which should satisfy my acceleration
needs.
There are some hard core folks that want to be able to step on it at 90,
but I'm not one of those . . .

Depends on what you consider to be "better"... in general, a close
ratio transmission will allow you to accelerate faster, while a wide
ratio will reduce the rpms at any given speed, increasing your fuel
mileage, etc. It is also possible in theory for a wide ratio to allow a
higher top speed, this is only true if the limiting factor is the
redline of your engine (if your engine will pull redline in 5th gear
with a close ratio, then you can go faster with a wide)
So... stoplight to stoplight racing - most people consider close ratio
to be better
Highway cruising - most people consider a wide ratio to be better.
It's all about trade-offs... like everything else in life.
