In the U.S., this sort of experience is similar - except for the lucky
ones that live in the arid areas of the southwest - where rust is rare .

I don't want to sound like a total doom merchant, but over here in not
so sunny Scotland, MK1 sciroccos are VERY scarce, thanks to the demon
rust. The first VW I had was a '75 Passat which looked OK on the
outside but was a rust-bucket underneath - you live and learn!
VW did, however, supposedly improve the anti-rust coating on all models
around '79, which would tie in with the fact that virtually all the MK1s
I've seen here are about that age or newer. Same goes for MK1
Golfs/Rabbits. If you are lucky, maybe yours is one of the better
protected ones.
The MKIIs are a completely different story - they seem to resist major
rust better than any of the other comparable age VW models. Most of the
ones I see in the yards have either been crashed or junked because
people don't want to spend the money getting the engine/clutch/brakes or
whatever fixed. Or, because they haven't been looked after, they look
scraggy and people don't want to spend the money. Considering that
there were relatively few sold over here, a remarkably high number of
them seem to have survived.
