VW/Audi really went out of their way to confuse people with this crap...

The current Audi A4, Audi A6, and Passat are based on variants of the B5
platform. (A4 smallest, Passat stretched a bit, A6 stretched a bit more)

The new Golf/Jetta, New Beetle, and Audi A3 (europe only, more confusion)
are based on the A4 (aka Mk4) platform.
