These are your lifters as already stated but you dont have to worry too
much. I dont know of any specific problems with 16v's but dont get bent out
of shape. When your lifters constantly make noise is when you definitely
need to get them changed. I've talked to VW specialists about lifters and
they say the same - not a dire problem and you can pretty much "take your
time" getting them fixed although I'd look into it soon anyhow.
