Wheel bearings

Hello all. Quick question. I think I have a front wheel bearing going bad.
Can I just jack up the car and shake the wheel to check the bearings, or
will this only work on the rear wheel bearings? The squealing noise comes
from the front of the car, and it doesn't do it all the time. I don't think
it's the brakes, just did them in April.
