GV PC Combo Card

Has anyone had success using the GV PC combo card which combines an
ethernet 10BaseT card and a 56K modem?  Specifically, the ethernet works
well, but trying to get the modem to connect with a USR Sportster 33.6
modem which hosts a FirstClass E-Mail system is next to impossible.

This card is used on a Powerbook 1400/166 running Sys 8

I'll connect but then the program freezes, or goes so slow as to be
virtually the same thing. I've varied the set-up several thousand ;-)
times but it still results in the same condition.  The connection
status, up on the menu bar always indicates 26400 bps, V.42bis 
connection speed regardless of set-up.

Any suggestions welcome.
