Sounds like one of your shift linkages, the shorter one, with plastic
sockets on the end, came off or broke. You should be able to see it by
looking in the engine bay. It is on the airbox end of the engine, close to
the firewall. If you've never done this before, the easiest way to find it
is to get a friend to wiggle the shifter around, then look in the above
mentioned area for movement. The plastic sockets get brittle over time, so
you need to replace that rod(don't worry, its cheap), but sometimes you can
just put it back on temporarliy and have it work.
