Dave,

These VW's are strong, you don't need to replace the pressure plate 
unless it is scored by the rivets in the clutch plate.  I have smoked 
them really bad and the pressure plates hold up well.

As Josiah wrote, they are cheap and easy to do, but if you have a 
clutch laying around, don't worry about using the old pressure plate. 
 These cars are ALMOST mechanically indistructable.
