I agree with you that the 16v is much nicer to drive.  I have only owned
one of each.  I bought an 85 rocco when I wrecked my Audi Coupe GT, then
I found a good deal on a 88 16v so I bought the 16v and sold the 8v.
After having the the Audi the 8v wasn't what I expected on the top end. 
On the bottom end it would kick the Audi's butt.  After I test drove the
16v and did a triple car pass at 110 mph I knew that this was the car for
me (long passing zone 45 mph traffic). I would have to say that overall
it has a more refined feel to it.  I love my car!
