Rallye golf?

        Sorry this isn't a scirocco question but my curiosity has gotten the
best of me.  What is the deal with the Golf rallye.  The only thing i know
for sure is they have a sweet lookin grille and light setup.  Are they G60
powered or do they have a different engine.  All wheel drive?  Is it the
same as a syncro?  Were they ever brought to North America?  yada yada yada...
