I think the car you're thinking of is the Triumph GT-6, a 6-cylinder coupe
variant of the Spitfire. My vote for spiritual forebear, though, would go
to the Alfa Romeo hatches from the Alfetta GT to the GTV6. Oh wait a
minute, these were actually the Scirocco's comtemporaries. Big duh for me.
At any rate, I'm sure there's an Alfa back there somewhere that'd fit the
bill.
