RE: Re[2]: a/c compressor

I gather that what I'd be looking for in this test would be to see if the
pressure sender, keeping the clutch from engaging to avoid the damage that
Shawn noted, could be overridden to get the clutch to "catch," right?

I've still got a couple of cans of Freon lying around from Back When We Didn't
Know Any Better, and the recharge kit that included that swell gauge. Seems I
recall that the compressor had to be compressing for the guage to read
anything meaningful (of COURSE I lost the instructions; sheesh); does anyone
else recall the same thing? Supposing it did spring a leak; how many cnas
would it take to get it back up to snuff?

I do so desperately hope that it's something electrical; after reading some of
those posts a couple of months back, I can just envision some mouth-breather
squinting and grinning at me, saying "Naw, it didn't have none innit a t'all,
but jest so happens ah got 'zactly the amount you need in this here cannister
sitting suspiciously near your car" as he prepares to sell it back to me.

Wouldn't be so big a deal if I didn't live in Columbia, SC, home of the Sweaty
Christmas.

Well, the good news would be all it needs is a recharge, or you wire
came disconnected from the pressure sender on the system.

The bad news (which may be since you said it was blowing real cold,
then suddenly stopped) is the compressor is bad. Jump the wires on
the pressure sender (2 green wires comming off of one of the lines
into the compressor) or from personal experience on my Jetta, I was on
the freeway, blowing cold, took a rock into the condensor, and lost
     all the freon.

Chances are good that you simply need a recharge in your A/C system. Low
pressure will keep the compressor from running. Its a safety feature so
you dont chew up the expensive parts.
