Instrument lights (Speriod)

Hello to all and to Speriod Duncum,
I used to have a complete procedure that I had picked up either from this
list
or from the vw newsgroups more than a year ago. That is how I changed both
the lights from my 87 16V instrument cluster.

Using that procedure, the bulb changing was amazingly simple. Though it
still required you to do all the bending and crawling in the car and the
time and effort, the procedure was logical and simple.

The unfortunate part is that I do not have a copy at this time. From what
I
 remember:

 1) First and foremost disconnect the negative terminal on your battery or
you are liable to be shocked time and again.
 2) Absolutely don't try to do everything from the top(instrument cluster)
 only
 3) Get in the driver's footwell and remove the plastic under dash stuff
out first.
 4) Then remove the instrument cluster screws from the top
 5) Get under the back of instrument cluster from the bottom and remove the
the speedometer cable from the back.
 6) Wiggle the wire connection loose from the back of the speedometer. (I
could not achieve this one) It is just a plastic mating socket connection.
 7) Take the instument cluster out from its pivot seat and lay it on its
face inside the cluster cavity.( I had to do this because I could not get
the wire connection out) Otherwise it may be possible to get the whole
 cluster out from the front.
 8) The bulbs have to be turned 1/4 turn(I think) either clockwise or
anticlockwise(obviously!) to get them out of the socket. For this I found
that a needle nose plier was the best tool. I could not do anything with
my
bare fingers. I could not access the bottom bulb because again the wiring
could not be seperated in my case. So I did not change that one.
 9) Installation is reverse of removal. Use the nose pliers to remove and
put the bulbs in. Don't try to use your fingers. It will not work! unless
 your hands are very tiny.
 10) It takes a good 2 hours to do this procedure. Give yourself that much
time. You may finish it in a much shorter time. But as the original writer
 of that procedure said
" If you can hammer a nail, then you can do this for sure" or it could be
"If I can do it then anyone can do it"
 11) Most importantly get the bulbs before you start this procedure. They
cost about 1.88 $ each at the dealer.

 Good Luck
