8V Performance Nightmare--Please Help

          Good day, everyone!
     
          A month ago, my '86 Scirocco 8V began stalling, sometimes while 
     driving, sometimes while idling at intersections.  After replacing the 
     fuel pumps, fuel filter, fuel distributor, and a relay, the problem is 
     only slightly better.
     
          My mechanic (not a strictly VW mechanic) suggested adding a 
     fuel-line dryer and keeping the tank at least half full.  I have done 
     so, however the car still stalls, but only when the tank reaches 2/3 
     full.
     
          So, what is the problem with this car, and what (if anything) can 
     be done to correct it?  Any input is appreciated.
