From my experience, when I drilled out my airbox, the seat of the
pants feel at the autocrosses is that it gave me a smoother top end.
You can only flow as much air as the inlet to the airbox allows.
Taking out the thermo-valve in the old scirocco airboxes is a good start,
then drill out is next level.
I also felt a little better throttle response, too.
Of course I have the K&N.
And it sounds good too...
