"Sticking" gears????
I put in a used 4K tranny in my 85 back in February. The guy I bought it
from (for $220) said it was off a an 84 GTI and had 80K only and he drove
it before he took it off the car. I really doubt that, as the round
posts of the shift linkage (that the plastic ends of the small arms snap
around) had a lot of rust on them. That tells me right there that the car
had not been driven recently.
Anyway, I put it on, and it has produced no problems except it was kind
of hard to take it out of 3rd or 5th (really mild, but I could feel it).
Then, the last 3-4 weeks with the temperatures rising, there have been
instances where I have to really pull hard on the shift lever to take it
out of 1st. It feels almost as if I am not depressing the clutch (which
of course I am, all the way). If I pull it hard it comes out and it is
ok. This symptom occurs about 2-3 times a week now. I have been told it
might be the adjustment of the clutch cable. I have adjusted it but have
seen no improvement. The only thing that might be the culprit there is
the fact that I am using an 84 Jetta cable, which is slightly shorter
than the 85 Scirocco cable (long story about why I have to use that
cable). Still, there is a slight play at the pedal, and a slight play at
the selector lever on the tranny, as there should be. I doubt that is my
problem.
Is this "sticking" of the gears a symptom that has been seen before? What
am I to do. I am already thinking about emailing the guy who gave me the
tranny and complaining to him.
