Speaking of steering racks, I have this problem: whenever going over
small/big potholes I hear these clunking noises from underneath the car.
Certainly something metallic. I thought it was the suspension: when I put
in new springs/shocks/bearings/bushings the sound did not go away. I then
thought it was the heat shield or the downpipe shield: took both of them
out and the sound did not go away. I thought it was the exhaust: when I
put in my new one the sound did not go away.
Practically the only thing that remains underneath that I haven't touched
is the steering rack (both my drive shafts and balljoints look ok, by the
way). I am wondering if it is really possible for something to have
loosened up in there and be causing this noise problem. Any ideas or
previous experiences out there? (the noise is quite irritating and
embarrassing, by the way, especially in the summer when my windows are
rolled down and I can hear it so well...)
