More on 16v front crank seal...

Hi,

One idea was:

:Have somone apply the brakes...

But it did not work because the wheels were not turning without the
brakes applied. Really, how much would the car want to roll in first
gear with one-half or even one turn of the crank. Surprisingly, not
hardly enough to detect. I was a bit too squeamish to apply a
lot of tourque this way. There seems to be a lot of slop to take
up. Besides, when the sprocket bolt breaks loose, I would want the crank
at TDC.

I have the AllData CD-ROM repair manual, which I find generally inferior
to Bentley, but sometimes lends a hint when Bentley does not. In it I
found a service bulletin for a torque change to this sprocket bolt. And
they also mention VW tool 3099 for locking the drive sprocket to the
block. I found that Zelenda has good used supply of this tool and
obtained it for half price at $27.
Regards,
Bob.
