I once called several different Midas shops and for the same work was
quoted anywhere from $125 to $525. When I took it to the $125 shop the
figure became $213. After, some dicussion and going to the back room, the
figure became $125 again. Go figure. In my opinion these are mainly sales
operations not service operations. They rely on a lot of national
advertising. It is my understanding that a muffler can be manufactured for
$10. If you charge, say, $213 (or $525) to put it on and give a lifetime
warranty, you can do a lot of replacements and still make a very good profit.
