87 8v

I have an 87 8v that I bought about six months ago.  I only paid $600
for with the understanding that fifth gear was gone (1-4 work great,
however).  It also had slight front end damage, but the car only had
82,000 miles on it, so I figured it had to be a decent deal.  Of course,
in the last six months, I have come to know the joy of owning a 'rocco.
Sorry, I digress.

A friend of mine has an 85 8v that he is willing to sell for $800.  The
transmission works, but the engine falls off about 3000 RPM.  If I buy
it, I'll have the transmission, but no money to put it in.  Is this
something that I can do on a weekend with wrenches and a hoist?  Or are
the two even compatible? and how do I tell?  Any
knowledge-opinions-IMHOs appreciated.
