Utterly useless Scirocco trivia (Default Radio Wiring)
Yes, up until 1992 VW Radio's worked without the car or ignition on.
In 1992 a sort of ACC was incorporated simply by having your key (or
other metal object) in the key hole.

I was under the impression that the radio was wired like this from VW.
My
87 16v still has the factory radio/speakers (never been touched,
I swear it!) which is directly connected to 12v. I've never seen
a Scirocco where the radio was connected to the ignition. Some
radios have a hard time with this configuration (Alpine) because the
LCD panel stays illuminated 24/7 and eventually lets go. I had this
problem
in my 82, and I had to put in a switch to control it.
