The absolute first thing to check is the drivebelts.  Unfortunately, I
have to drive my VW's through deep puddles (almost 1 foot deep most of
the time) everyday in my driveway.  When the belts get wet, they slip
and my alternator and oxy sensor lights come on.  So I'm guessing that
if your belt is loose, the same thing is occuring to you.
