 Interesting that you should make these claims. The papers that came
with the 134a conversion kit I used, said to fill the system only to 80%
capacity. (sounds like lower pressure to me) It also cools better than
the old system did on a full charge of r-12.
I can say this because the system was running on r-12 just a week
before... Full charge
too. We converted after a hose blew off... Damn stripped screw.

 Go for 134a, but DO change the seals & replace the oil. Even though we
didn't and aren't having trouble, doing so will virtually guarantee
trouble-free operation. Also, r134a is cheap cheap cheap and very easy
to find.
