Engine trouble!

Hi!

I feel real bad because I relly don't give anything useful to the list but
from time to time I'm asking for some help. 
But I really need it! So: 
It acts like this: when I press the gas to the bottom, engine starts
vibrating and gives no acceleration. When I raise my foot just a few
millimeters the vibration stops and car starts moving.
What is wrong?
Oh - its a '86 8v 1.8 GTI
