Yes, it is possible. The bearing will spin within the hub, which creates
heat, galling, etc. It can make quite a mess of a hub. You are right that
no moving piece contacts the hub - but when that (non moving) piece moves,
all sorts of trouble will occur. The bore for the bearing gets "wallowed
out," so a new bearing cannot be pressed back in - actually, no pressing
needed, it'll fall in, from the two I have seen. Well, if and when you get
the old bearing out, a new bearing would basically fall in;).
