Torch for loosening yer nuts

How exactly is heat used for loosening parts?  Do you heat everything to
red, then put a wrench to it?  For instance, if there is a stubborn nut, do
you heat only the nut and try to keep the bolt cool?  What about frozen
studs?  And is this the lastest resort after the penetrating oil lets you
down?
