Have you looked at other options like modifing the intake, better exhaust
etc.
My friend has a 81 Rabbit with an 1.7 L  It has no problem keeping up with my
Rocco.  He has done everything  I have done to my engine (1.8L).  He has the
weight advantage.  Try all the cheaper mods first -- you'd be surprised at
what will happen with very little money spent.
