Yeah, checking compression requires a compression tester.  Haven't 
priced one lately, but don't think they're too pricey.  Of course, 
you won't find one in my tool box :)  All the shops I used to work 
for had them, so I never needed to buy.  And if I needed to check 
compression after I changed careers, I just went back to where I used 
to work and borrowed theirs.  Of course, now that I moved to the 
other coast, I can't do that and will have to buy my own if the need 
arises.  Then again, if I still lived in PA, I could have used my old 
employer's garage and done the damn clutch and  tranny myself :)
Sucks being in a new place with no connections :)
