You have just described a classic problem which Mannix hit on teh 
head.  The cable is a twisted strand cable, and as these strands 
break and bend, they will bind up inside the casing.  My guess is you 
have about 5-10 more pushes on teh pedal before the cable snaps and 
you are stuck.  

When you get the new cable, also get a new grommet for the top of the 
pedal assembly, the round orange sponge thing that the cable hooks 
through, you'll be glad you did.
