Help !! Removal of Oxygen-Sensor !!!

 I tried my hands at removing the Oxygen-Sensore with the Special tool which
I purchased....
 I got a few turns with the socket till it got pretty hard to turn, at which
time I pursued it with a hammer and pipe.....
  I got it loose so I could turn it with the socket and finally with my
 hands, but now the OXygen-Sensor with not come out of the Exhaust-Manifold..
  It is supposed to screw out isn't it ????
 Am I missing something here ????
