I don't know of any metal gears, either, but I don't think power has
anything to do with odometer gears cracking. Both of my GTI odometers
broke, which combined had aroud 200 horsepower. I don't see how power
could crack them - the speedo gear gets turned - the amount of power is
constant. The rate at which they are turned changes, I guess, with faster
acceleration, but I'd guess this is trivial - odometers on all sorts of VWs
crack the tenths gear, regardless of power.
