I've used the vise/pipewrench deal with some luck.  The inserts 
usually come with a new nut, so beat the nut with a large hammer to 
shock the rusted threads, this works sometimes.  I have also used a 
torch to heat the nut red-hot, this will help break the rust lose.  
As a last resort, go to a bone yard and get another set of strut 
housings.  Sometimes they just don't come apart, period.
