I'll chime in here.  My 85 8V used to get as high as 35 mpg on the 
highway.  Since I replaced the timing belt the best I got is 32 
probably because I have the timing advanced.  The lowest I get is 
around 29-30 in a mixture of highway and city driving.  Mine has 
stock gearing, which is the close ratio trans.  One thing I've 
noticed is that when I'm cruising around 70-75 I get better mpg than 
at 60-65 by one or two mpg.  Given the close ratio, I found this 
surprising.  I generally don't drive faster than that so I don't know 
what I'd get cruising faster.  Guess it's time for a trip to Montana 
to see what would happen :)
