I just got done repairing my blue mylarplastic on the back of my speedo.  I
had to solder ta bunch of wire.  the traces burnt through the mylar.  One of
the traces must of rubbed up against the dash some where.  No junk yards
around here would part with it unless i wanted to buy the speedo assy.  the
VW dealer just laughed at me.  It's a pain in the ass but it can be done.
 Check the back I'll bet you have some burnt traces.
