This is certainly true, although it wasn't even Giugiaro's first
choice for it...

I'd have to disagree really on that one...

Giugiaro's came first, but was rejected by VW (possibly on cost
grounds)

Yeah, quite possibly, although the Scirocco strikes me as being a lot
wider, possibly due to the lower roofline.

Definitely not. It was only when VW refused the design, GM picked up
on it, and gave it to Isuzu to produce.

They do have certain merits, I'll agree, but I think they have dated
a lot more than the Scirocco II has, so perhaps VW made the right
decision.

You bet they were! They had decent engines (witness the Lotus Elan,
same engine and suspension layout...)
