Help identifying engine

Hey all;

Anyone have info on VW engine numbers?

I recently acquired an 86 Scirocco.  The engine number is RV 503573.

It has a points distributor, which leads me to believe it's not the
original engine.  What a clue, hey.

I'd like to replace the engine at some point,  but would like to know what
I'm dealing with now.

Any and all assistance is appreciated.
